The Department of Mathematics is one of the leading departments of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. Since its inception in 1967, the department has been engaged in quality teaching and research, committed to providing higher education in Mathematics. It has a highly qualified, dedicated, and research-oriented faculty with expertise in diverse fields of mathematics. Currently, the department offers an undergraduate programme, namely B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics. It also offers courses to the B.A. Programme as Major/Minor options. These courses, designed by the University of Delhi, not only impart theoretical knowledge but also provide hands-on experience and conceptual clarity through practical classes using software such as Mathematica, R, LaTeX, etc. The department has an exclusive computer lab and access to the state-of-the-art college library, which houses an extensive collection of books on Mathematics.
The department believes in the holistic development of students. In line with this vision, the Mathematics Society of the college organizes its annual festival, GANITAM, based on vibrant mathematical themes. This platform allows students to express their creative talents. Various inter-college competitions, such as paper presentations and quizzes, are organized during this festival. Additionally, the department hosts seminars and talks, often led by faculty members, alumni, and experts from reputed research institutes like the IITs, to enhance students’ knowledge and keep them updated on the latest trends in the subject. The department also organizes national and international conferences to provide global exposure to both students and faculty. Alumni of the department are well-placed in reputed organizations both in India and abroad.

Shelly Mehandiratta
(Batch 2014-17, B. Sc. (Hons) Mathematics)
It has been 5 years since I left SBSC, and I have constantly felt the effect this place had on my personality as well as on my career path. SBSC helped me build a strong foundation in Mathematics and develop a range of interpersonal skills. I interacted with experienced faculty and peers who inspired and challenged me. The flexible curriculum allowed me to pursue other interests, including language skills (particularly German), which led to admission and a scholarship in a renowned German university. I completed my Masters in Applied Mathematics with a focus on Insurance Mathematics and currently work as an Associate at KPMG, Germany.

Kuwari Mahanta
(Batch 2012-15, B. Sc. (Hons) Mathematics)
I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at IIT Guwahati. Delhi was new to me, but I found a home in friends and immense support from SBSC professors. A piece of advice from Ms. Jyoti Varshney Ma’am – “focus on the top of the mountain” – still guides me. The faculty were proactive and nurturing, helping bridge the academic gap from school to college. SBSC’s GANITAM festival helped hone my social and managerial skills. Seniors were always ready with guidance, creating a wholesome environment. My time at SBSC deeply shaped who I am today.

Mahesh Mantri
(Batch 2016-19, B. Sc. (Hons) Mathematics)
My 3-year journey at SBSC was transformative. The course catalyzed both personal and professional development. I pursued an M.Sc. in Mathematics from IIT Kanpur and now work at ICICI Lombard as an Associate Data Scientist. The professors went above and beyond in their support. Even after graduation, they remain approachable for academic and career advice. The SBSC environment offered a worldview beyond academics, and I feel fortunate to be part of such a community.

Chaintanya Kumaria
(Batch 2019-22, B. Sc. (Hons) Mathematics)
For me, studying Mathematics (Hons) at SBSC was a pilgrimage. I matured as a person, made lifelong friends, and was guided by inspiring faculty. I served as General Secretary of the Mathematics Society, organizing two GANITAMs and the National Mathematics Conference. I also founded the Alumni Association, organizing the first alumni meet. These experiences developed my leadership and teamwork skills, which contributed to my academic and co-curricular success. Thank you, SBSC, for the unforgettable journey.
